River Oaks

Rub elbows with football players and politicians in the luxurious River Oaks neighborhood. Central to Houston but with a small town neighborhood feel, River Oaks is an excellent community to live with your family. Filled with single-family homes and condominiums, River Oaks is studded with elegant historic mansions along with new construction embracing a modern flair.

River Oaks was established in the 1920s by William and Michael Hogg, the sons of former Texas Governor Jim Hogg. Along with attorney Hugh Potter, they developed what is now an exclusive community with plenty of parks and esplanades liberally planted with oaks, shrubs, and azaleas.

This stately neighborhood is located within the 610 Loop between Downtown and Uptown. Its boundaries are set by Buffalo Bayou, South Shepherd Street, Willowick Road, and Westheimer Road. It sits north of the Upper Kirby district and near the freeway and other major thoroughfares such as Kirby Drive and San Felipe Street.

Go shopping at the River Oaks Shopping Center and take in a film at the River Oaks Theatre, an historic art house theater located in the middle of the retail center. Take in a concert by the River Oaks Chamber Orchestra, composed of musicians from across the country and guest conductors from around the globe. Easily access the Galleria district and the center of the city.

Along with the River Oaks Theatre, patronize the many galleries offering the best of Houston’s arts scene. A short drive takes you to the Menil Museum to take in the exhibits or look in at Tootsies on Kirby for elegant, designer brand shopping. Rare and sought-after brands are also available at the variety of boutiques in the area.

Join River Oaks Country Club on the northern end of River Oaks Boulevard. It offers a golf facility designed by Donald Ross, one of the most renowned golf course designers in the history of the game. The country club opened in 1923, and has hosted the River Oaks International Tennis Tournament since 1931.

Bayou Buffalo Park offers 124 acres of running, hiking, and walking trails. Nearby are excellent libraries and quiet spots for reading or enjoying the weather. River Oaks Park is also close by and features a replica of Cinderella’s carriage for the kids to enjoy. The area also boasts some of the best schools in Houston. Rice University and the University of St. Thomas are also situated nearby.

With low traffic, River Oaks is a family-oriented community lined with imposing oak trees, which are decorated during the holidays with abundant lights. It’s a truly splendid sight.

French Chateau

This private residence commands an expansive five acre site of rolling terrain in the exclusive River Oaks community in Houston.
