The name Tanglewood comes from the Tanglewood Tales by Nathaniel Hawthorne. This well-established neighborhood was developed and named by William Giddings Farrington, as the Tanglewood Tales was a favorite of his daughter. The name also brings to mind the summer academy for the Boston Symphony Orchestra. This neighborhood was home for many years to the late former President George H.W. Bush and his wife, Barbara.
Located in Western Houston just outside the 610 Loop, inside Beltway 8 in Uptown Houston, Tanglewood is a leafy, upscale community established in 1949. Built on coastal prairie, the developers worked with tree preservationists to expand the wooded feel of the area. The community can be found just off San Felipe Road. Downtown Houston is only a few miles’ drive east.
Tanglewood Boulevard is studded with live oak trees planted by the Tanglewood Garden Club. You can also find a bike path and a variety of walking trails. Benches line the roads, providing beautiful places for walkers to relax and take in the scenery. For more outdoor pleasure, go to Tanglewood Park at Woodway and Bering, where there are walking trails and tennis courts.
Most of the houses in the neighborhood are relatively new, many having been built since the 1980s and continuing with new construction today. You will see two-story English-style brick and stone homes along with Mediterranean-style stucco houses with clay tile roofs. One popular style was influenced by the Italian designer Andre Palladio and featured a symmetrical design, stucco exterior, tile roofs, and arched windows. There are also many examples of the Rambling Ranch home on expansive lots.
Strict deed restrictions prevent business from establishing itself within the neighborhood. Both private and public schools are available from Pre-K through 12th grade. Private schools include St. John’s School in Upper Kirby and the Kinkaid School in Piney Point Village, both nearby.
Shop at the high-end stores of the Galleria or enjoy a steak dinner from one of the premium steakhouses. Del Frisco’s and Morton’s are ready to serve a mouthwatering meal, as is the Palm Houston. Have drinks at the Pearl Bar Houston and dance the night away.
Tanglewood is a true gem in the heart of Houston.
